What is the Berner Oberland Pass?
The Berner Oberland Pass focuses on a region rather than the whole country. Choose 3, 4, 6, 8 or 10 consecutive days and explore from a base such as Interlaken, Thun or the surrounding mountain villages.
Coverage and what to check
The participating network combines trains, buses, lake boats and mountain transport. Some routes are included and others discounted. Use the coverage map for your year of travel, because routes and benefits can change.
Is it right for your itinerary?
Group nearby outings together. One day might focus on Lake Thun, another on the Lauterbrunnen valley and another on a mountain excursion. Make a wet-weather alternative before purchasing a consecutive pass.
Mountain coverage: included or discounted?
Check the map for your year of travel before paying. The operator's current guidance distinguishes these popular outings:
- Jungfraujoch: not fully included. The pass covers travel as far as Wengen or Grindelwald Terminal; the onward ticket receives a stated 25% reduction.
- Grindelwald First: the mountain transport ticket is discounted by 50%. Summit activities are not automatically included.
- Schynige Platte: included within the published network, subject to its operating season.
- Schilthorn: the operator lists the route via Stechelberg or Grütschalp/Mürren as included; check current operation and any disruption before travel.
Lake journeys and scenic rail connections
Lake Thun and Lake Brienz can provide a slower-paced contrast to mountain days. Use the scheduled boat timetable to plan your outward and return connections, especially outside the main summer season.
The published coverage also includes the GoldenPass Express route between Montreux and Interlaken and the Luzern–Interlaken Express. Reservation charges remain separate where applicable. Check the precise service and class when arranging a scenic rail journey.
Build an itinerary around one regional base
As an illustrative three-day plan, devote one day to the Lauterbrunnen valley, another to a lake outing, and the third to a mountain journey selected for the weather and season. Interlaken offers a useful starting point for this type of plan, but compare hotel location with the station or landing stage you will use.
Choose the excursion order after checking forecasts and opening dates. A consecutive pass continues to run on a day when you stay indoors, so it helps to prepare an alternative that you would enjoy rather than adding travel only to use the pass.
Compare the complete regional holiday cost
Add any arrival and departure travel outside the covered area, discounted mountain tickets and reservations to the pass price. If you already hold another Swiss travel product, check whether it qualifies you for a reduced regional-pass rate before buying.
Do not buy two passes simply because both cover familiar destinations. Compare the additional journeys and savings the regional pass actually provides. For families, check the operator's child options and whether an existing valid child card is accepted; the regional pass alone does not automatically issue a Swiss Family Card.
A regional base or a nationwide tour?
A stay centred on Interlaken and the Bernese Oberland calls for a different comparison from a tour with several distant bases. List the regional outings first, then account for arrival and departure journeys outside the pass area. Compare the result with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card using the same excursions.
How to plan and book
Jungfraujoch is not fully included; an additional ticket is required. Check mountain operating dates independently of pass validity. Compare any reduced regional-pass rate available with your existing travel card.
- Choose travel dates and check route coverage.
- Compare the fare for each traveller and travel class.
- Check reservations, activation and purchase conditions.
- Save tickets and booking details before departure.
