PLAN AROUND Days between destinations

What is the Swiss Travel Pass Flex?

The Swiss Travel Pass Flex suits a holiday with pauses between travel days. Choose 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 days within one month, instead of using a continuous block.

Coverage and what to check

On activated days, use the included transport and visitor benefits within the published network. Do not assume that transport discounts or museum benefits continue on days you have not activated.

Is it right for your itinerary?

Travel from Zurich to Lucerne, spend a few days exploring on foot, then use another day for the move to the Bernese Oberland. Count every day you want to use pass benefits, not just the days you change hotels.

How selected travel days work

Flex counts travel dates, not individual train rides. Once you activate a day, you can combine covered journeys and eligible benefits on that date. Several transfers on one day therefore use one selected day, while two short trips on different dates use two days if you activate both.

The overall validity is one month. Use the exact start and end dates printed on your pass rather than treating every month as a fixed 30-day period. Activate the day before taking your first journey and follow the instructions delivered with your ticket.

Benefits on an activated day

  • Travel across the included train, bus and boat network.
  • Use participating local transport in more than 90 towns and cities.
  • Visit participating museums within the pass programme.
  • Use included mountain transport and applicable mountain discounts, subject to the coverage map and operating season.

On an inactive day, do not present the Flex Pass expecting the same benefits. If you decide to take a boat trip or visit a museum, compare the ordinary cost with the value of using one of your remaining days.

Example: three travel days across a longer stay

Imagine arriving in Zurich, spending several nights in Lucerne, moving to Interlaken and finishing in Zermatt. You might allocate your three days to Zurich–Lucerne, Lucerne–Interlaken and Interlaken–Zermatt. Walking days between those moves need no activation if you use no pass benefits.

This illustrative plan does not include a final journey out of Zermatt. Add that journey to your calculation before choosing the pass duration. Also count any lake trips, city transport or mountain discounts you want between hotel changes; a three-transfer holiday can require more than three benefit days.

When Flex may offer less value

If you travel on almost every day of a short holiday, compare the consecutive pass carefully. If your active days involve only inexpensive local journeys, individual tickets may cost less. Flex is most useful when its selected dates match the journeys you actually intend to make, rather than a theoretical list of places you might visit.

Flex or consecutive travel days?

Consider which days you want to travel, rather than simply how many nights you are staying. A museum visit or lake trip may affect your choice of an activated day. Compare your plan with the consecutive Swiss Travel Pass. If you only need one substantial travel day, also check the Saver Day Pass.

How to plan and book

Activate each selected day before your first journey using the instructions supplied with your pass. Keep your ticket and identification available. Check reservations separately for any panoramic train.

  1. Choose travel dates and check route coverage.
  2. Compare the fare for each traveller and travel class.
  3. Check reservations, activation and purchase conditions.
  4. Save tickets and booking details before departure.
